Mary Sumah-Keh

Mary Sumah-Keh is a harmonica player and comedian who auditioned for Series 5 & Series 8 of Britain's Got Talent. She was aged forty eight at the time of her second audition and was an ex-care worker at the time of her second audition. She was born in Accra, Ghana.[1]

Series 5[]

She first auditioned in Series 5 as a musician. Before her audition, she was seen backstage reading a book about The Queen and describing The Queen as her idol, before expressing excitement at the chance she had to show the judges her talent.

In her audition, she jumped around the stage and span in circles whilst playing the harmonica. Amanda commented her belief that Mary had ‘Great spirit', with David Hasselhoff adding his belief that she couldn’t top her performance if the judges were to invite her back. She was sent home during the audition stage of the competition.

Series 8[]

In Series 8, she returned as a comedian. Before her audition she informed the Judges that she had taken part in a comedy course, which she had paid £200 for.

She began her performance by asking 'are you all alright?'. When the audience responded 'yes', she replied 'no, you are all left'. After a short period of silence, all four Judges buzzed the performance. Amanda commented 'It was so bad, I don't even know what to say', with David Walliams jokingly asking 'Mary what kind of marks did you get in your exams?'. Mary then responded that she had passed her course and had the certificate before Simon then went on to state 'I think you should get a refund'. She was once again, sent home at the audition stage of the competition.

After BGT[]

Outside of Britain's Got Talent, Sumah-Keh has performed as a gospel singer. She released a single entitled 'Ghanaian (Ewe) Praise Medley' in 2017.[2] The song won the award for the Best Christian / Gospel Song at the Akademia Music Awards.[3]

Trivia[]

  • She received David Hasselhoff's first ever 'no' vote and Michael McIntyre's first ever 'yes' vote.
  • She opened both of the audition episodes that she appeared in, as she was the first act to audition in Episode 501 and the first act to audition in Episode 806.
