Just Us

MerseyGirls are a dance group who reached the Final of Series 11 of Britain's Got Talent. They auditioned in Manchester, getting the Golden Buzzer from Alesha Dixon. They originally auditioned under the name 'Just Us' stating that 'No-one's ever going to come between our friendship'. The original quintet consisted of friends Julia, Annie, Alice, Rebecca, and Poppy and the quintet originally formed the group when they were but five years old.

Before their audition, lead dancer Julia revealed that she had scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, which means that she will not be able to dance after her surgery, therefore this 'Is the last time I'll be able to do it'.

In their audition, they performed to 'Fight Song' by Rachel Platten, dancing in unison with Julia putting on and taking off a white t-shirt during the performance. David described their performance as an 'Absolutely stunning performance’, with Alesha adding 'It really touched me, and that's why I'm going to do this', before pressing the Golden Buzzer and sending them automatically through to the Semi-Finals.

In their Semi-Final, they performed to 'Rise Up' by Andra Day, beginning with Julia standing on one side of a pane of glass, with the others standing on the other side as 'Reflections'. They then moved to the same side of the glass and began dancing as a unit. Alesha remarked 'That was so touching, and what I love is the friendship and unity between all of you girls', whilst David simply stated 'That was perfection'.

In their Final performance, they performed to 'Together' by Sigma & Ella Eyre, beginning in a box, with Julia stood in the middle of the group in a chair. They the left the box, and performed the rest of the song as a unit. Alesha described the group as 'Five gorgeous girls up there, fighting, doing what you love', with Simon adding 'In every performance you’ve given it 100%, your music choices are outstanding and that is why we can relate to what you’re doing'. They finished 9th in public vote.

Before BGT[]

In 2011, Carlile appeared as a schoolgirl in Channel 4 soap opera ‘Hollyoaks’, before then going on to appear as an extra in 2012.

In 2014, Carlile voiced an uncredited girl in the video game ‘PS Vita Pets’.

In 2016, Carlile appeared on an episode of CBBC’s ‘Hank Zipzer’ as the character of Molly for one episode and on CBBC talent show Taking The Next Step in its first series, making it to the final six in Canada, before being eliminated.[1]

After BGT[]

In November 2017, it was announced that Julia had received her operation which costed £175,000, paid for by Simon, and that she was able to dance once again.

MerseyGirls performed again in public for the first time in February 2018.[2]

In 2019, they went on tour alongside Bailey McConnell, Kneworlduk also known as KNE, and Gabz.[3]

In late 2019, MerseyGirls returned to Britain's Got Talent, on The Champions (Series 1) wherein they performed to 'Scars to Your Beautiful' by Alessia Cara. What seemed to be the strongest moment was the dance group lifting Julia up and Julia performing backflips whilst the whole group wore Golden outfits. Simon commented 'Wow, That was special', with Alesha adding that if she had another Golden Buzzer, she would have used it for them. They went on to reach the Final over Antonio Sorgentone and Paul Zerdin.

To begin their Final performance, the group surrounded the judges desk and performed to 'Alive' by SIA, before performing several flips, and spinning objects before throwing objects from their hands. Their performance culminated as Julia flipped through every member of the group. David commented that it was a 'Stunning performance', with Amanda adding that she hoped that her and Alesha's daughters could take one 'Message' from the girls. They were ultimately eliminated in an undisclosed placement in the bottom 7.

In 2020, Carlile voiced Mary-Jane Watson in the short ‘Spider-Gwen’ and portrayed Kayden Ferguson in four episodes of ‘Tin Star’.

In Winter 2020, the group returned as part of the Britain's Got Talent Christmas Spectacular and performed a Christmas themed dance routine with the background of an ice palace with an ice throne, as Calum Scott performed his song 'You Are The Reason' live alongside their performance. The group concluded their performance by having Julia stand upon the ice throne and the other members surround the throne by kneeling down upon the stage and leaning upon one another before standing in a row together upon the stage.

In 2024, the group competed on ‘America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League’ where they were drafted onto Mel B’s Team and were eliminated in the Preliminaries instead of Sheldon Riley.
