Out of the Blue are an acapella group from Oxford who made it to the Semi-Finals of Britain's Got Talent in Series 5. They were aged between 18 & 22 at the time of their audition. The group were all studying at Oxford University or Oxford Brooks at the time of their audition however were all doing very different degrees which ranged from classic, chemistry & maths. When asked if they believed they were good enough to win the show one member stated 'Uh yeah I think so'.
In their audition the group performed both 'Poker Face' by Lady Gaga & 'SexyBack' by Justin Timberlake by using their voices for both the instrumental segments of both songs, and the actual lyrics of them both which they sang, however towards the start of the chorus one member began singing the latter song rather than the former song as they mixed both songs together with one another. Michael commented 'Out of the blue I really just did not expect that. I think it kind of added to it that your all from Oxford University as you all look so intelligent' before pointing to one member of the group stating 'You look like you can solve any problem in an instant your just there thinking about maths and equations, you came up with this really enjoyable so much fun and even during it I was thinking I wanna see what you can do with other songs'. Amanda added 'I thoroughly enjoyed it boys it was a triumph'. Louie concluded that when the group walked out he believed the judges had a 'very serious choral society from Oxford gonna sing a big big anthem or choir and then you did Lady Gaga', before stating 'It was very funny, it was very original and I think I think the Royal Family need to see this'. They advanced onto the following round and later reached the Semi-Finals.
In the Semi-Finals the group performed 'Jump (For My Love)' by The Pointer Sisters by using their voices for the instrumentals, whilst also singing the lyrics of the song, as they stood on the centre of the stage with a red background behind them displayed on the electronic screen, they concluded their performance by jumping into the air before landing back on the stage as confetti was set off at the back of the stage behind the group. They were eliminated at their Semi-Finals end by Public Vote in fourth place in terms of voting statistics.
They had previously appeared in Television on BBC One's South Today, Central News, The Slammer, and The Culture Show. They also competed in the University competition of The Voice Festival UK, five times, making the final on each occasion, and being crowned the winners of the competition twice, between 2009 and 2014, being the only group thus far to win on two separate occasions. They had previously appeared on Radio Stations Irish Radio, Jack FM twice, and BBC Oxford a total of three times, KUSC a radio station based in California, Los Angeles.
They later went on to appear on MTV Sports' Good Morning in Sri Lanka, The One Show, Sunday Brunch, Pressure Pad, Cuckoo, and Pitch Battle. They were knocked out by ScotSoul in their first battle, after judges Chaka Khan and Kelis both favoured their opponents, with only Gareth Malone voting in their favour.
