Steve Royle

Steve Royle is a comedian & juggler from Lancashire who placed third in Series 14 of Britain's Got Talent. He was aged 51 at the time of his audition, and he had been performing for over 30 years. He had previously performed as a warm-up act on the Royal Variety performance. He had also previously co-written Peter Kay's comedy Phoenix Nights, alongside Kay himself.

Royle began his audition by juggling using three clubs, before throwing them onto the ground; he then cued the music to stop and remarked 'Sorry, I forgot - there used to be two of us'. He then announced he was going to do some balloon modelling, asking Alesha to name an animal. When she responded 'Elephant', he remarked that that was too difficult and announced he was going to 'Mind-read', asking her to think of an animal whilst giving non-subtle hints that the animal he wanted was a dog. He then began to 'blow up' the balloon, however this resulted in him 'puffing up' his cheeks instead. It was then revealed that he had table tennis balls in his mouth, and he began to play the guitar and mime lyrics, before juggling the balls in his mouth and juggling several guitars. Amanda remarked 'It was old-school but it felt fresh, it felt polished', with Simon describing the act as 'End-of-the-pier Britain'.

Royle began his Semi-Final performance by repeatedly dropping and picking up bowling balls - something he continued to do for the first half of the performance. He began by referencing the 'Virtual audience' and mimicked explaining to his father how to use technology, before 'juggling' the balls, one of which hit him on the head, causing him to 'fall' off the stage. He then 'sped up' his voice in order to perform '15 minutes of jokes in 15 seconds', before finishing his performance with tap-dancing and more juggling of bowling balls and bean bags. David confessed that he 'Almost pressed his Golden Buzzer for [Royle]', with Alesha adding 'You are superhuman, you are perfect for this show and I really hope you’re in the Final'. Royle won the Judges' Vote with receiving the vote of all four judges and advanced directly through to the Final.

Royle's Final performance began with him connecting and disconnecting a rope to its socket, which played and paused music respectively. He then performed a series of short stints, including asking Alexa to vote for him, dancing, remarking that he 'Couldn't be retrained' (with regards to remarks made by the Chancellor Rishi Sunak) and miming the use of a 'moo box'. He finished his performance by performing a pretend 'synchronised swimming routine' alongside his family, and juggling various items. David described Royle as 'All the best comedians rolled into one', with Alesha adding 'I would love to see Steve Royle at the Royal Variety Performance'.
